The island's capital is the town of Lefkada, with its distinguishing scaffold multi-colored buildings and a lagoon of unique beauty. This lagoon is the natural habitat of many rare bird species and it is protected by the Ramsar convention and by the Greek Ministry of tourism for its natural beauty and importance for the flaura and fauna of the area.
